Now we’re in the 3rd month of 2010 all your best laid intentions from the beginning of the year have probably gone by the by and you’re having some trouble sticking to your fitness regime. But you aren’t the only one- I mean who really wouldn’t prefer to eat a nice meal with their partner rather than go for a tiring run in the rain?
Now we know that we all do it, how do we try and stop ourselves from giving up on our regime at the first hurdle.
Tip number one, is to do with the type of exercise you choose. It may seem obvious but always make sure you choose something you like. I’ve heard of people spending years doing a particular sport that they don’t really like but have fallen into whatever reason, and unless they are very strong willed, they are setting them up to fail. When you get people like this to try something new that they might like, or something that they know they like they usually find their willingness to exercise increases- and more importantly stays high.
My second tip is that there is power in numbers so work out with a friend. Alot of people already do this, but many of us don’t consider the actual person we work out with, and this can have a huge impact on your fitness regime. The right type of friend, who encourages you when you’re feeling lazy, or builds healthy competition with you, can really spur you on and make sure you don’t miss sessions and give them your all. However some friends encourage your bad points, and will cancel at the last minute, encourage you to take too many rests, or make you feel inadequate, and they can have a negative effect on your exercise sessions and your view of exercise as a whole.
My last tip is to stay positive! We’re only human and we all have lapses or pitfalls from time to time, but the best athletes are the ones who don’t let that blip impact the rest of their training. Try to recondition your thinking when you slip up, so rather than saying ” I missed the gym, I’m quitting” make the decision to work twice as hard next time and give yourself a break tonight. Another way of reconditioning your thinking is to be aware of the excuses you usually make not to exercise, so if you often skip a class because you forgot to take your kit to work with you, then make sure you keep some emergency kit in the car all the time.
Hopefully these will help you be fit for 2010, but remember as long as you’re enjoying exercise and are healthy one little chocolate bar, or night of rest isn’t really going to make a difference.
