How Important are Monoclonal Antibodies?
Harmful foreign bodies are terminated by immune systems rich in antibodies. Antibodies have several types and sub-groups and monoclonal antibodies are some of these. Antibodies don’t necessarily identify each pathogen prior to attack; they just see them as foreign bodies. So, what it does is it sends out antibodies to mark these foreign bodies by attaching themselves to antigen that can only be found on foreign bodies so that immune cells could identify them and destroy them. In other individuals, even their own cells can destroy other healthy cells. A good example is cancer and auto-immune diseases. The mechanism of cancer is such that cells can’t control their growth and multiplication and cause destruction in surrounding tissues. Your cells are not attacked by your immune system even if they are abnormally and rapidly growing.
