A fireproof safe is a great investment for your home or business. By purchasing one you avoid the necessity of a bank deposit box and the corresponding trips to the bank, saving you time and money.

Fireproof safes come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. The smaller models can weigh as little as 14 pounds while the larger safes can weigh 100 pounds or more. The safes are extremely versatile and can be used to store expensive (or just sentimental) jewelry or important documents such as passports, social security cards or your vehicles title.

Depending on how you intend to use the safe, you can often get by with a smaller box. If you need a coin box for a specific event, or if you want to store cash or smaller items, all you need is a small box. Storing larger documents or jewelry will require a larger box.

Not only will you have to consider the size and storage capacity, you’ll also want to seriously consider how easy it is to use your safe. Some safes, after all, are far easier to use than others.

While having a safe that is easy to use might seem like an advantage, that is not necessarily the case. If such a safe is stolen, it can also be easily broken into. You may wish to obtain a safe that is difficult to open.

Don’t get a safe that is merely fire or water-resistant. You want one that is both fire-proof and water-proof. Why? If you have a fire, water will most likely be used to extinguish it, which means you will want your valuables safe from both fire and the water used to put out the fire.

Many larger safes have an anchoring hole that allows them to be bolted to a wall or floor so that it can’t be removed. These safes will hold all your valuables, and are especially good for basements and closets.

If you choose a smaller fireproof safe, make sure it has a handle so that it’s easier to move the safe around. For safes with combination locks, make sure there is a combination backup in the event that you lose the key.
