The future of home entertainment is here. That which was once the promise of the future is now as common as apple pie and light bulbs. This is not to say that the Disney Blu-ray collection is anything to thumb your nose at. On the contrary, it’s a thing of beauty. Imagine unparalleled picture quality, theater-grade sound, and a host of bonus features that don’t require three discs to hold. No, the Bu-ray wave as crash against the shore, and consumers are basking in it’s beauty.

It may seem like a bunch of nonsense. Just what is all the fuss about, you may be asking. After all, you’re just now getting around to investing in a DVD collection. Why should you bother with this Blu-ray nonsense? Unfortunately, you should bother because if you’re a lover of film and enjoy an unparalleled picture, you have no choice. though I am loath to suggest you pay out any more than you have to, this is the future of film.

Over the past three years, Blu-ray libraries and collections have tripled in size, spurred on by the eagerness of such powerhouses as Apple, Sony, and Disney want to make the changeover complete. Not only will it mean mobilizing the public to play catch-up again (anyone remember the cassette / VHS to DVD race?), but it will also offer a radically superior end product. Of course, it is a matter of personal taste when it comes down to playback quality. Think of it as the sheet test. If you’re happy with your 500-thread count sheets, why upgrade to 1000-thread count sheets?

It is never a glib proposition to recommend anyone upgrade to anything. Unfortunately, the sheer number of advantages Blu-ray discs have over conventional DVDs make it difficult to not urge a new buying strategy. Whether you delay for another two or three years is entirely up to you. But the future is charging ahead and so is the future of home entertainment.

Most consumers will continue to enjoy having a choice between DVD and Blu-ray discs. Though they are penetrating the DVD market, Blu-ray discs have not become ubiquitous. Of course, as seven of the big eight movie studios push to release more and more Blu-ray collections, that freedom of choice has a time limit. Couple the increasing selection with the inevitable drop in Blu-ray player prices, and you have the makings of a perfect marketing storm.

This is why the death of the DVD seems inevitable in the face of the emerging Blu-ray technology. With a slight tweaking of the color spectrum, Blu-ray has rendered conventional DVD players as hard to watch as VHS. Hard to believe, but true. The blue laser of the Blu-ray technology renders HD quality films and sound, while condensing all that data more efficiently on the disc. This means two and three disc boxed sets will be far more rare -- either that or studios will release even more bonus materials. Perhaps they will feature every facet of the films production, from pitch to screen, including actor auditions. Another selling point is the durability (alleged) of the Blu-ray disc. While a typical CD disc can still provide decent sound quality even when scratched, a scratched DVD disc seldom performs well. The tiniest scratch can derail and entire film. The Blu-ray, disc, allegedly, is far more durable and even enjoys a buffering layer to protect the data. Whether or not this stands up to public scrutiny, it does makes for an attractive bullet point on the proverbial PowerPoint presentation that is mass marketing. The exciting part of the Blue-ray revolution is the catalogues of movies set to be released. Every major studio is poised to release a selection of popular classics and new releases on this radical new format. Perhaps one of the most anticipated collections is the Disney Blue-ray catalogue. With blazing new sound and picture quality, you just haven't seen SLEEPING BEAUTY or PINOCCHIO until you've seen it on Blu-ray.
