Mig Welding, The Wire Feed Welding Process

Mig welding, also called wire feed welding, costs less and takes less time than other techniques of welding.

Automated welding robots can be setup to do MIG with breath taking results. Welds so perfect and done so fast it is fascinating to watch. These robotic cells are used throughout the manufacturing world for car and truck manufacturers right down to the smaller job shop type engineering works.

It is also known as gas metal arc welding which is abbreviated as GMAW.

It is defined as a continuous feed of electrically charged wire into the welding arc. This constant feed of wire allows the electrical connection to heat the metal and create beads of melted wire, which turn into welds when cooled.

Here are some reasons why it is a preferred process to use:

1. Is reasonably simple to do.

2. Because it is always continuously feeding in the electrode it completes the job faster.

3. Is less expensive and more economical.

4. Welding automation devices can be fitted to maximise productivity.

5. A shielding gas can be used in the process to create smoothly finished welds.

When using a shielding gas as opposed to using a gasless mig wire the welding bead appearance is much smoother and there is significantly less spatter.

Mild steel, stainless and aluminum are all easily welded using the mig welding process.

Before you buy a machine you need to first think about what you plan to weld with it. As the thicker the metal the more power you are going to need.

After deciding on what will be the main thickness and type of materials you plan to work with you can then start to research what machine to buy. I would suggest that you got a unit that is slightly bigger than what you need right now, as no doubt there will come a day when you wished you had. If you get a bigger one, your duty cycle will also be better and this will allow you to keep welding for that little bit longer.

You will also be required to buy tips and liners to keep your equipment working efficiently, and to extend the life of your mig welding gun. Keeping your welding consumables clean is very important to stop wire feed welding problems. So you must make sure that you have good quality contact tips as some of the cheap stuff is absolute rubbish, they cause erratic welding wire feed. And sure you remove any rust, oil, paint or grease from the metal that you want to do mig welding on.

Mig welding is a very good process to use and is a good skill for you to have under your belt. It has allowed us to join bits of metal together faster and better than other methods or techniques.
