The prospect of making a speech in public is enough to send most people into an absolute tailspin. Many say they fear death less than public speaking. This fear is normal and even many great performers have said they never really get over the fear but have learned how to deal with it. Thankfully, most of us aren’t called on to make public speeches on a regular basis, but it is good to know that we can conquer the fear enough to do so when needed.

A speaker from the past who worked hard to conquer his fear of public speaking was Billy Sunday. Billy Sunday lived about a hundred years ago and was known as the greatest preacher of his time. He told that he rehearsed before a mirror to get every intonation and gesture down just as he wanted to make maximum impact.

One of the most frightening request a friend can make of you is to go before a crowd and make a speech or toast. Even worse if you are expected to be funny; humor is hard when you are scared. You probably almost feel like declining the offer.

Do not panic because you have to come up with a humorous wedding toast or speech for your friend’s wedding. With a series of steps we can help you put the funny toast together and prepare you to deliver it. You don’t do this kind of thing often but with our help you can do it this time with flair.

Prepare for the toast by writing down everything you remember about the couple. Leave out incidents that might embarrass them or the other guests. Question the couple about stories they remember involving family and friends. Every memory is a story; use the funny ones for your toast.

After the brainstorming and interviews write a first draft. Both the first draft and the final draft should begin with an introduction of yourself, a foolproof way to break the ice and relax yourself. Include in your introduction a description of your relationship with the couple. Follow this with a funny memory from the past. Focus your attention on the couple not the whole crowd, this will help relax you. End the talk with some heartwarming thoughts for the couple and what their friendship has meant to you.

Next you need to write the final draft of your humorous wedding toast. Your speech needs to be about five minutes long- five to six hundred words. Include the best of your material, jokes memories and stories. The talk should be practiced until memorized. You will entertain the guests better if you do not have to read every word. Some great speakers have found it helpful to practice in front of a mirror.
