The country called Kenya is one of the best known safari destinations in Africa. At its peak, the country attracts over 1.5 million tourists every year. Tourism is one the best earners of the Kenyan economy . Kenya is truly blessed in terms of its natural attractions but there are some worth mentioning more than the rest.
Home to the Seventh Wonder of the World, the 1530km2 Maasai Mara National reserve from July and November hosts the world renowned wildebeest’s migration spectacle. Due to its rowdy nature, that sees wildebeest cross the crocodile infested Mara River, international tourists pitch camp near the crossing point and wait for days to witness it.
The Maasai Mara has all the “Big Five” wildlife the elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion and rhino. They are best viewed at the Mara River and Esoit Oloololo escarpment. Tour companies, offer hot air balloon expeditions for tourists, to view the natural proceedings of the grassy open plains, from birds eye view.
The second unique attraction in Kenya is the Lake Bogoria found within the Rift Valley. The lake’s main attraction is the got geysers and springs. The geysers spew hot underground water and its said that one can boil an egg here in minutes! Its said the springs have therapeutic properties good for the skin. Lake Bogoria does not have many visitors and thus its a good place to have picnics. Some of the wild animals that are found here include the hippos and the gazelles plus one hundred and thirty five bird species including the flamingos that feed on the algae found in the surface of the lake.
The other unique attraction in Kenya is the coastal city of Mombasa known for its warm weather, laid back people, sandy beaches and clear waters. Mombasa is hot and humid all year round and this makes it a good attraction all year round. Mombasa has many places that one can visit but some of the places that stand out include Fort Jesus and the Gedi ruins.
Nyali beach is a good option for those that would want to go for wind and kite surfing. A company by the name of Prosurf Kenya organizes such events. The coral reef found at the Indian Ocean is also another unique attraction and is home to millions of fishes and strange looking creatures. If you wish to explore the ocean, you can opt for snorkeling or a dhow trip.
Nairobi national park is also another unique attraction within the city of Nairobi. Its the only park in the world bordering a city. The animals that can be found here include the buffaloes, rhinos, cheetah among others. The park is a good stop for those that in a hurry and don’t want to travel for long miles. The David Sheldrick trust sanctuary is also found here and it cares for orphaned wild rhinos and elephants. Nairobi national park is home to over 400 bird species and 80 mammals. This place is good for family outings and bush dinners and team building exercises.
The Nairobi National Museum is laden with eclectic ancient artifacts that visually depict Kenya’s history. It has the botanical gardens where unique plant species like medicinal and ornamental plants and herbs are grown. But its main draw is the Nairobi Snake park home to poisonous vipers like cobras and mambas, and merciless constrictors like African Rock python indigenous to Kenya. Coral fishes American alligators and crocodiles are reared in the museum’s aquariums.
