No matter where you go or how old you get, there are always going to be certain individuals you meet that seem to float through life. They just go wherever the breeze takes them and yet always seem to come out on top. But for you, life is a constant battle. You have things you need to accomplish or simply want to accomplish but do not know how to get to that point. What you need to learn is how to set goals. Here are some answers to your questions on goal setting.
How do I set goals? The first step for goal setting is to identify what it is you want to accomplish. To use an example let’s say you have a very important research paper or report due in two weeks. You know that you are going to have to meet this deadline and that there are steps along the way that have to be done in order to complete the paper or report. The first step is stating what the end goal is which in this case is the report or paper. The next step is setting a firm date that it has to be accomplished by. Then you begin filling in the proper steps. It is almost like an outline of the project. You know you are going to have to research so that is placed in order. You know you are going to have to write it and then review it before submitting. Each step you place to reach your goal is one that can be marked off either physically on a piece of paper or mentally. Before you know it your goal will be met. This same process can be applied to any goal that you want to set in your life. It can be quitting smoking, losing weight, saving money or even taking a vacation.
What types of goals do people generally set for themselves? Goal setting varies from person to person. In the workplace goals may be set to achieve certain sales records or to complete projects. The workplace, i.e. the employers or bosses, may set individual goals for certain areas or may present a companywide goal that everyone works on. A good example of this would be to increase revenue in a certain quarter without being forced to downsize. Personal goals may be losing weight, stopping smoking or simply spending more time with the family. Goals are intensely personal so what one person has as a goal may not be the same as another.
How realistic should the goals be that I set? Goal setting ought to be realistic, yet at the same time it never hurts to aim high. Sure, you may not be able to have a relationship with a star, however that doesn’t mean that you can’t make it your objective to get in shape or try out for a local play. There are always going to be some objectives that are beyond your reach. You will need to know the difference between the two. Most objectives are achievable if you work at it enough.
Would professional help be useful in order to set goals? If you find that your goal setting methods are failing as a rule, you may need some outside help. Life coaches and motivational speakers are great at helping folks see what areas of their lives need some improvement. A life coach can help you take a pragmatic look at your goals and help you figure out the most effective approach to meeting them. They can then help to motivate you along the way. By knowing how to stay motivated you can eventually begin taking on your goals yourself without the support of a professional.
Goal setting teaches individuals very important lessons. It teaches people about setting life goals and then achieving what they dream. It gives them a sense of accomplishment when they have met their goal and this boosts their self-confidence tremendously.
