Garden Edging gives a defined separation between your gardens and your lawn. It keeps the grass from growing into the garden and prevents weeds from invading garden spaces. There is a variety of garden edging for your garden materials that can be used to keep the yard looking manicured and beautiful.

The most inexpensive way to edge a garden is to just cut the edge. To do this you need a spade shaped shovel. Get into the garden and dig at an angle toward the lawn. Dig down about 5 inches or more and pull the earth away from the garden. Once you have an area done stand at your starting point again but this time in the yard. Dig with the angle toward the garden this time. This will create a small edging trench all around the garden. There are machines that will do this type of an edge for you as well. It might be good to check and see if your local Do-it-Yourself store has one that you can rent because edging by machine takes much less time than by spade.

Just edging a garden lasts about a year. You may have to go over it again by the middle of the summer just to get some of the grass out that has wandered into the trench. If you wish for something a little more permanent you can install other edgings made of wood, plastic, metal or stone.

Edging made of wood can be found in pieces that once put together will encompass the garden. Make your own edging out of two by fours that has had a treatment to prevent them from rotting in the ground. Dig a bit of a trench around the perimeter of the garden and dig the two by fours in connecting them with nails. You can also get railroad ties to make an edging. You can even stack them one on top of another in order to create a nice raised bed. Wood edging is not very flexible and you can only create gardens that are square or rectangular in nature since the wood does not bend.

Plastic edging gives you the flexibility needed to have your garden edge curve or be round. Plastic edging is usually black and has one end that is sharp that is pushed into the ground and the other end is rounded that stays above the ground level to stop weeds from entering the garden. The plastic creates a barrier that grass can not cross. Metal edging works in the same way but may not last as long due to the fact it will rust after a few years. Plastic edging may become dislodged, especially in the winter when the ground expands and contracts. It just has to be repositioned when spring comes along.

Stones have been used for edging gardens since there have been gardens, but this method may cost a bit of money. If you live where stones just come up from the ground you can make a stone edging. You are a very lucky person if the stones are all round. Just put them around the garden end on end. Flat stone is sometimes used to make a raised bed by stacking the stones. This takes a great deal of time to do and will probably cost much more.

Another option for stone edging is to dig a rather deep trench then pour small stone into the trench. This looks especially attractive when you have white stones or lucky stones in the trench. You can also use pea gravel or a larger gravel. This can be expensive because of the amount of gravel needed to fill the trenches.

Use cement blocks to edge the garden. You can also stack them to create a raised bed for those who have a hard time getting on their hands and knees to weed. If you do not like the look of the gray block you can paint them any color you like. You can also use bricks in varying patterns to make a garden edge. Some manufacturers make a brick edging that is scalloped that just has to be dug into the ground a bit.

If you want your garden to look tidy garden edging is a big necessity. It will not allow grass and weeds to enter into your gardens. Materials can be an investment or they can cost nothing at all. The materials come in great variety and you should be able to get edging that you can afford and looks great in the yard.
