Every year kids ask the question when is mother’s day? The one day each year when women get recognized for their endeavors. The second Sunday in May is a time for phone calls, flowers and cards sent from around the world. This holiday has been celebrated for centuries in a variety of ways, but always with the same meaning to recognize the women in your life.

This day can be viewed in a variety of different ways. One it can be the day for mothers to lounge in bed and wait for breakfast to be served to them or two it is the day when grown ups call their mom from across the miles to catch them up on the previous years activities.

This Sunday in May is also the one day a year when children can be as messy as they want in the kitchen and not one of their moms will be concerned about the flour covered floor and sink full of dishes. These days fade over time and become replaced with a ten minute call out of guilt.

A mom is any woman in your life that wiped the tears and hugged the boogie man away. Mothers day is a time for celebration of the women in your life. Your biological, foster, sister, aunt or grandma, these are the women in your life. A mother does not have to be the one who gave birth. A mother is the one who was there.

Long gone are the days when you rely on the strength of your mother to encourage your daily routine. As an adult we instead assume the once a year phone call will be enough to brighten her day. And it does make her day; however, as a daughter I can say with confidence my mom wants the anticipation of talking to her spread out through the year. As a mother I can confidently say I agree with her. Sometimes we get caught up and forget the little things that mean the most.

What was it that brought enough attention to mothers to warrant them their own day? When is mothers day? Anna Marie Jarvis made it vow to continue what her mother had started and that was to make a day for recognition of mothers as a recognized holiday. In 1914, the goal was met and mothers day became a recognized holiday, however, this was centuries after a similar day was honored.

This was centuries after the English began their custom of Mothering Sunday which was the day given for servants allowing them time away to travel home in order to give respect to mothers. The celebration of mothers has taken many changes throughout centuries. The day to celebrate has changed as well as the original purpose. The servants of 1600s were delighted to take the self baked cake to their mothers.

Jump ahead many centuries and we find children gleefully making chocolate chip pancakes. But now mothers are anticipating not the arrival of their children but instead the bouquet of flowers sent as a sign of remembrance attached to a basic typed florist best wishes card. Mothers are happy to get their surprise flowers; however, has the holiday created to honor the woman who made you who you are been reduced to a card from the florist.

The majority of mothers can still produce the first card presented to them along with the macaroni sculpture you could not wait for her to unwrap. This year when May rolls around and you begin to ask yourself when is mother’s day and what should I send? Surprise the women in your life with the best gifts for mothers day of all, you. And for a real treat throw in a handmade card, some homemade chocolate chip pancakes and a macaroni masterpiece, I can assure you both will be on display for years to come and the breakfast will be her most memorable in years.
