A Glimpse Of Stirling

Stirling – Stirling is a Scottish city right in the center of the country, though slightly more to the east side. The town is very historically important due to its old age and strategic placement in the course of events of British history. It has a fortress and was significant for both local and national politics.

Its geographical importance has direct influence over its political and economical status over the years. It lies directly between the high- and low-lands, which means that any attacking force going from one area to another would have to cross through Stirling. Naturally, many opposite forces were there waiting. The area is on a hill, so defense is easy, and it lies on a river, so shipping and water travel are easy.

This is why Stirling saw so many battles in its time. The Scottish War of Independence held one of its biggest battles here. This became well known in modern times because it was one of the best scenes in the movie “Braveheart.” Though the film itself was not true to history, the battle they showed was.

William Wallace, who led this revolution, has a monument in Stirling which is more of a giant behemoth of a building than an actual monument. The Church of the Holy Rude is, despite the monument, the most important in town. This is because it is the only church still standing in all of Great Britain besides Westminster Abbey which had a coronation there. A coronation only happens in a place of great significance. If the coronation were not enough to demonstrate that, the number of times the city was fought over should be an indicator. It has switched hands dozens of times.

A good source of tourism trade for the city is the fact that Stirling is reputed to be haunted. There are several ghost tours one can go on through all the historic–and more modern–sites. Other tourism revenue comes from football and rugby fans. The town has both of these teams of their own. It is also a good place for military learning, since it is a strategic battle area. Scholars come here to study first hand.

It has always been a trade and market community and holds on to that to this day. It is no wonder, considering how close it is to rivers which lead to the ocean and its path in between countries. The building of a railroad with its own railroad station did not hurt the commerce, either.

One interesting sight you might not expect to see is the Blair Drummond Safari Park. There are no other African parks in Scotland. The town has its own university, too.
