America has been in love with cars since they first hit the road, but things changed a couple of years ago. Remember the day you went to the gas station to fill up and the price read $4.00 for a gallon of gas? I do and remember thinking what the heck is going on.

Hybrids and other alternative fuel vehicles have gotten a lot more attention since then. Are there things you can do to make the car you have more efficient? You bet there is.

#1 Change your air filter on a regular bases — Your car has an internal combustion engine. That means the fuel mixed with air is what makes the engine work. If your air filter is clogged up you could be losing up to 10% of your fuel efficiency. Change the air filter a couple times a year. It is actually very easy and very inexpensive. It is seriously something you can do yourself, usually for under $10.

#2 You don’t need to floor it all the time — Seriously, you are not a NASCAR driver (well, you might be) you don’t need to put the pedal to the floor. Ease into it and you will definitely be a more efficient driver.

#3 Stick to posted highway speeds — Driving at the posted speed limit my not be fun and exciting but, it will definitely help with your fuel consumption. Use the cruise control when possible. The more consistent you keep your speed the less gas you will use.

#4 You have got to get to your mechanic — Your car will flat out last longer if you get the scheduled services. Not only that, it will be as fuel efficient as it possible can, so do yourself a favor and see your local mechanic a couple of times a year. I can hear you groaning now.

#5 If you can go without it, turn off the air — This really applies to older cars. Newer cars recycle air in the cabin, thus taking pressure off the system to create cool air. Most older cars don’t have this feature and will get worse mileage if you constantly run the air conditioning.

Pick a few and implement them, and you will save money. Every little bit counts.
